Add fullness to your face without injections with the right products

Watched a TV commercial yesterday on a new product they're advertising that adds fullness to the face, where you are losing volume. BRS has had this product for years. In fact we have 2 of them. The ingredient that adds volume is Hyaluronic Acid and/or Hexapeptide-3. Both Firm & Lift Elixir and Multi-Peptide & Collagen Elixir have VERY high amounts of these ingredients. We are seriously cutting edge, all the time. I keep up on this stuff to make sure we have the best, all the time, because my face depends on it too :-)

Newest Skin Care Treatments in 2015

Should you follow skin care trends?  Short answer, don’t believe everything you read or are told.  Ask questions, a lot of questions.  Knowledge is power. I research everything!!!  At BRS facial spa we don’t add new treatments simply because they are new or because everybody else is doing it.  Trust me when I tell you that this industry is constantly reinventing the wheel.  Companies that make the machines we use have to keep coming up with new machines in order to continue to make new sales.  Once they sell a machine to a skin care therapist it’s a done deal, they can’t sell it to us again, so they need something else to wow us with so they can keep selling equipment.

I attend the big Aesthetic shows several times a year, every year, to see what is new, and I challenge the new treatments.  I can tell you, without a doubt,  I am one of the people these companies don’t like to see at their booth.  A couple of years ago I got some flack for writing a blog post about a new machine that combines Diamond Microdermabrasion and Hydra-Oxygen.  They were new to the market at that time.  We offer both of these treatments at BRS facial spa,  but we have one machine for each, it’s not a dual purpose machine like the one being promoted.  When I asked the benefit of the dual purpose machine over having each machine separately they could not answer, other than to tell me it is more convenient.  But it isn’t more convenient.  What if one of the modalities need repair, but the other doesn’t?  It’s necessary to give up the entire machine while it’s being repaired which results in the skin care technician not having 2 modalities at their disposal instead of just the one being repaired.  This is the main reason we have one machine for each treatment.  In addition, the cost of the multi machine was thousands of dollars more than purchasing them separately.  Literally 25K from one company that I talked with!!!!  Are you kidding me?  The enormous amount of money spent on these machines is why the consumer pays so much for these treatments.  The cost trickles down, it has to.  Otherwise how are these skin care studios going to pay for these machines?  Makes sense right?

Some of you might have read this story before, but since we have a lot of newer clients I’m going to tell it again.  At another booth, at the same show as the above story,  was a new machine that uses vacuum suction to promote collagen development.  Okay, there is so much wrong about this that I don’t even know where to start.  First of all vacuum suction does not promote collagen development, that is ridiculous.  Vacuum suction is used to loosen and remove  debris from the pores or to facilitate a lymphatic treatment.  In addition, the vacuum is used to vacuum dead skin cells for a cleaner treatment.  For example, all Diamond Microdermabrasion machines use vacuum suction to suck up the dead skin cells as they are removed during the treatment.  The benefits of this treatment come from the abrasion to the skin not the vacuum suction.  In fact, the vacuum setting used should always be set on the lightest suction because pulling the skin with a higher setting can cause damage.  All that being said, this booth I was visiting was promoting a machine they claim plumps the skin through vacuum suction.  I was watching the demonstration as my questions were piling up in my head.  Before asking my questions though, I wanted to see where this was going, so I watched.

When the demo was finished the model receiving the treatment sat up to show how the side of her face that was treated was more plump than the side of the face that was not treated.  Well HELLO!!!!  If you suck the crap out of your face with a vacuum it’s going to swell.  That’s not collagen!!  That’s swelling which will dissipate very soon after the treatment is finished.  BTW the cost of this machine?  30K.

Collagen production can ONLY be generated by damaging the cellular connection deep within the skin which causes the body to rush to the damaged area to repair it.  The repairing of this tissue is accomplished through collagen development.  This is why we use treatments like peels and non-invasive face lift among others.  These treatments cause controlled damage resulting in collagen development.  Knowing this, I asked the technician giving the demonstration to explain to me how this treatment results in collagen development.  She told me the collagen is produced from the suction.  Again I asked HOW does suction develop collagen?  She kept repeating the same answer and then moved on to someone else’s questions because clearly I was irritating her.  I then asked her if there are any side affects to this treatment and what about the pulling of the skin, couldn’t this pulling lead to loosening of the connective tissue?  She quickly answered there are no side affects, she completely ignored the second part of my question while giving me a pretty irritated look.

I left completely irritated at these ridiculous claims and felt sorry for the people falling for it and spending literally thousands of dollars to buy this machine.  So the next day I went back to the booth, in disguise and with my husband.  I was afraid she may recognize me, but luckily for me, there was a different person manning the booth that day.  I asked if my husband could be the model for the demonstration, she accepted him as her model and started the treatment.  When the treatment was finished she followed the same routine as the girl did the previous day; sat him up to show the onlookers the plump side of his face.  I didn’t say anything, I didn’t ask questions, we just left.  I watched my  husbands face deflate over the next hour and THEN it started to show signs of bruising.  The next morning his face was black and blue from all the suction and it was very swollen.  Probably not necessary to mention the swelling was not collagen,
it was trauma from the brutal use of high suction.

So what’s new and stupid in 2015?  PRP is getting a lot of hype this year.  PRP is short for Platelet Rich Plasma.  A persons own blood is drawn and then spun to separate the plasma which is later injected into areas of the face needing rejuvenation.  The claim is that this plasma is safe because it comes from your own body, an alternative to derma fillers like Juvederm, for example.  The plasma contains platelets which are proteins that stimulate collagen growth.  This collagen growth is what plumps the skin.  The cost for this treatment ranges between $1,500 and $2,500 per treatment depending on the area you live.  The problem with this treatment is not just the cost. It also does not build any more collagen than a peel or other means of causing the controlled damage necessary to build new collagen. It simply costs a lot more.  It’s an impressive technique, I’ll give it that.  It requires a doctor and some very expensive machines to spin the blood.  There is simply no scientific proof or studies that show this way of attracting collagen is any better than other more traditional  methods.  In addition, consider these treatments need to be repeated, as do all collagen treatments, usually every 3 to 4 months.  Now that gets expensive with PRP.  In my opinion this is simply another fancy and expensive way to reinvent the wheel.

The many different treatments available to maintain your youthful skin are not any different than the many different diets and exercise programs there are to maintain your weight and health.  What does this mean?  There are literally hundreds, if not thousands, of different diets and exercise programs you can follow to lose weight.  The bottom line is that with all of them you are doing just 2 things:  Eating less and moving more.  It’s not any different with skin care treatments.  There are literally hundreds, if not thousands, of different ways to have younger looking skin.  Don’t fall for the hype, simply make sure your skin care therapist is addressing the main issues that cause skin to age and look old.  Do these things regularly and you will look younger.  Here’s the areas you want to make sure are addressed:  Texture, Soft Tissue Rejuvenation, Color, and Muscle Tightening.

At BRS facial spa this is our end game.  We offer our clients the Modality Facials so that each time they come in to see us we are addressing the areas mentioned above, we keep them rotating and active and engaged at all times.  We use well known, tried and tested treatments for collagen development, for exfoliation through manual or chemical means, we address muscle loosening, and soft tissue rejuvenation as well as color tone and overall condition of your skin.

To sum it up, there is no miracle cure for aging.  We all do it.   At least we all hope we do, the alternative to not growing old is dying, nobody wants that.  Here at BRS facial spa we take a very sensible yet extremely targeted approach to help you age gracefully.  Some of our treatments can be aggressive, however, you can rest assured we are not going to learn about some unknown side affect by trial and error on our clients.  You can also rest assured that nobody wants to keep their skin looking young more than we do, we’re kind of obsessed about that, and that’s good for all of you.

BRS facial spa skin care annual skin care treatment recommendations

Start your New Year off with a great face. Our recommendations: Make sure you are using your BRS Products at home. This is by far the most important part of your skin care routine. Without good at home care you might as well forget the treatments too. I hate to say it, but it's true. Getting a facial once a month and then going home to poor skin care products is like working out at the gym then going home to burgers and fries, doesn't make sense. Here's what we recommend. Schedule your Modality Facials once a month. Every 3-4 months schedule a Peel or a Collagen Attraction & Activation Treatment (c.a.a.t.). I like to start off my year with a Peel or the C.A.A.T. because it's easier to remember.

Remember if you receive Botox and/or fillers you still need to pay attention to the texture and quality of your skin. It's important to protect your skins' elasticity and protein bonds. If you ONLY get your Botox and fillers and ignore the 'quality' of your skin you will need your Botox and fillers much more often, so protect your investment by keeping your skin in it's absolute BEST condition, then use the Botox and fillers as the cherry on top Think of Botox & Fillers like spanx for your face. The better shape you are in the less you will need the spanx.

Here's what my year in skin care looks like:
Jan...... Peel or C.A.A.T.
Feb...... Modality Facial
March.. Modality Facial
April..... Peel or C.A.A.T.
May..... Modality Facial
June.... Modality Facial
July..... Peel or C.A.A.T.
Aug..... Modality Facial
Sept.....Modality Facial
Nov...... Peel or C.A.A.T.
Dec...... Modality Facial

Skin care treatment questions answered

The Differences Between The Peel and
The Collagen Attraction & Activation Therapy

Deciding which is best for you depends on which areas need the most attention.  Both of these treatments overlap in the benefits they provide.  That being said, each of these have a primary benefit different from the other, it’s the secondary benefits that overlap. What does that mean?

Let’s start with the benefits of the Peel & down time

The main objective for the peel is to exfoliate the skin, to rid the skin of any dead cell build up exposing the fresh new skin beneath.  In doing so the peel also has other secondary benefits, which are helping the skin to build new collagen which helps fill in fine lines and wrinkles, it also lightens the skin making dark pigmentation less noticeable.  In a nutshell, it’s main purpose is to resurface the skin leaving the skin softer, smoother, brighter and more radiant with improvement to fine lines and wrinkles.

Healing from the peel:

Down time - 7 days with 4 full days of noticeable and active peeling.
How long without make-up - 7 full days, no make-up.  After day 7 you will return to your normal routine of caring for your skin.
____________________________________________________________

Collagen Attraction & Activation Therapy (C.A.A.T. ) & down time

While the main purpose of the peel is to resurface, the main purpose of the C.A.A.T. is to build massive amounts of new collagen resulting in fullness and lift.  It’s secondary benefits are that it also resurfaces the skin and lightens dark pigmentation.  This treatment results in tighter lifted skin that is softer, smoother, brighter and more radiant.  In a nutshell it’s main purpose is to lift and fill in areas that have dropped or become hallow due to the loss of collagen.

Healing from the C.A.A.T:

Down time - 36 hours with nothing on your face, not even water.
How long without make-up - 36 hours,  no make-up.  After that you return to your normal routine.  With this treatment your skin will release, as it does in the peel, only without the actual peeling affect.  Instead of noticeable peeling it sheds.  This is why we bring you back for 2 Diamond Microdermabrasion during the course of your treatment.

So which is best for you?  It depends on your needs.  Generally a good rule of thumb is this:  The C.A.A.T. is best for anti-aging purposes because of it’s ability to lift the skin and in ADDITION is also provides a thorough resurfacing.

The Peel is a better choice if you problem is blemishes or scaring left behind from scaring, or simply wanting the remove a layer of skin to lighten and brighter your complexion.

Skin Tips for Menopause

Menopause changes not only your attitude and waistline but also your skin.  Feeling hot? and not in a good way?  During the hormonal changes that occur during menopause your skin will change and act and react differently than it used to.  This is a time to pay attention and care for these changes before they happen or as they occur so you can keep your radiant complexion well into your golden years.  Believe it or not menopause does not always mean drier skin, for some their skin will change to oily.  The one thing you can count on, is that it will change, along with many other changes going on in your body. Hence the term, "the change of life."

This is a time, more than any other, to make sure you are receiving professional treatments at least once a month.  Your skin will change not only over time, but from month to month as well.  This is especially true during the first years of menopause.

Tweaking your at home care will also be necessary during this time.  Your skin care professional will make note of your skin changes and make recommendations to you for the right products to be using at home.  During this time you may feel like all the things you used to do for your skin are no longer working.  If you are like most women you are going to continue doing the same things anyway.  Well ladies, you all the definition of insanity right?  Doing the same thing over and over expecting different results?  You must change the way you care for your skin, because your skin is changing, it's a cold hard fact.

It is more important now, than ever, to protect your skin from the sun.  Your skin will break down quicker making exposure to the damaging rays from the sun even greater to the appearance and the health of your skin.

Below are some basic things to make sure you are doing on a regular basis to care for your changing skin.
  • Cleanse twice daily with the appropriate cleanser for your skin type and changes
  • Use a Skin Softener, not an astringent or toner after cleansing.
  • Use your SPF every day, rain or shine to protect against UVA and UVB rays
  • Exfoliate at least once a week with a gentle manual exfoliation to rid the skin of old skin cells.
  • Moisturize daily, in the morning with SPF  and again at night with a deep moisturizer.
  • Use your topical Vitamin-C daily, it's the best anti-oxidant available to protect against free radicals which damage the skin.
  •  Use a daily Retinol or Glycolic  to dissolve build up on the surface of the skin
  • Receive regular once or twice monthly treatments from your Esthetician
In addition to these things diet is also very important.  I will be writing a separate blog post on diet and nutrition for the menopausal years soon so check back for that.

Body Bar Trial Size

1oz Trial or Travel Sizes of the Eucalyptus Body Wash is available to try. $2.99 each. Formulation of this product is still being tweaked, would love your feedback.
Eucalyptus, Lemon, Sea Salt, Tea Tree and Lavender are all combined to create an aroma therapy treatment for the entire body. Eucalyptus acts as a natural anti-bacterial giving you the cleanest clean possible. Feels cool and soothing on the skin. An energizing product for sure. Great way to start the day :-)  Can be purchased in-store only at this time.

Doing a little market testing on body products.  I am thinking about bringing back the body line.  Some, as you know, have never been off the shelf, but when we repackaged we had to pick and choose the most popular items to repackage.  It was a tough decision as all of the products were good sellers.  We have always planned on bringing them back, now that the move is completed and the repackaging all done it might be time to put my energy into a re-introduction to these products.

The process I am considering, in regard to packaging, is much more simple than before.  In order to save you money we are thinking of supplying these products, the body washes and scrubs, in bulk that can then be dispensed into bottles and labeled right then and there for your use at home.  All ingredients and descriptions of the products will be on the bulk packaging on the shelf, in large pump-type sealed containers.  The product will dispense from the sterile bulk packaging into individual bottles of your choice.  Kind of like how they do it at Olive Oil Stores, where they supply the oil in large vats that are used to fill the smaller bottles.  Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

What do facial toners and astringents do?

What are facial toners and astringents, and what do they do?  Are they necessary?  Confused?  Use them because you think you should, but don't really know why?  Here's the scoop on this confusing issue.

Toners & Astringents are the same thing with different names.  If you ask me, both are simply an extension of the cleansing process.  If you are seeing residue on your cotton ball after applying toner or astringent the message to you should not be: "Oh good, had I not used astringent or toner this would still be on my skin."  Instead the message should be this, "You didn't cleanse your face very well."  After a thorough cleansing of your face there should not be any make-up, oil, or residue of any sort left on your face.  So in my opinion you do not need a toner or an astringent you simply need to get better at washing your face.

What about the toners and astringents "closing down the pores".  We've all heard this right?  News flash you can achieve this with a cool water rinse.  It's not the ingredients in the product that are closing down the pores it's the temperature of the product, usually room temperature.

At Beautiful Radiant Skin (BRS) we do not sell or use them, instead the second step in our daily regimen is a Skin Softener.  What's the difference?  A Skin Softener is going to open the pores of your skin so the following products can penetrate to do what they are intended to do.  Remember your skin is like a sponge, it will absorb product better if it's damp when product is applied.  Skin Softener will aid in this process.

How to have glowing skin this summer

How to have glowing skin this summer

The most important things you can do are
 (1) Exfoliate
 (2) Moisturize

Using a good manual exfoliation product, we recommend and use BRS Exfoliating Pore Reducer   at least twice a week during the summer months to keep that radiant glow.

Exfoliating manually, in addition to your monthly facial treatments, will make sure all the dead skin cells are removed on a regular basis.  A good exfoliation increases circulation as well as aiding in a deeper delivery of the product that follows, as well as helping to control breakouts and minimize scaring left from previous blemishes.  Exfoliating is a must do.

The morning skin care routine I recommend for every age group, no matter how young or old, for beautiful glowing skin is the same.  The difference in skin care products used for different age groups happens at night.  Daytime is the same for everybody.  Shocked?  I know, right?  We all want to start of our morning routine glowing and protected.  We leave the treatments for different age related issues to our night time products when your skin has all night to soak in and benefit most from all that they do.

Follow this morning routine and see how radiant and glowing your skin looks

               1.  Cleanse
               2.  Manual Exfoliation at least twice a week during the summer months
               3.  Use a Skin Softener to open pores for acceptance of next product
               4.  Vitamin-C Elixir to help fight free radicals and ward off dark spots
               5.  SPF-30 combined with moisture for all day protection

It's fast and easy and your skin will look great right away!  Curious about the different routines for different age groups or skin issues?  Click Here

How to use skin lightening creams correctly

As evident in the card shown above, it is very important that you use your skin lightening creams correctly  The directions here are for any skin lightening cream or product, but obviously we like our best!  I have used many lightening products over the years and none of them did what I wanted them to do, which is what lead to the development of an all natural yet VERY effective product by Beautiful Radiant Skin.  Luminous White works!  For more information on this products or to read about ingredients etc. please visit our website at BRSfacialspa.com or BeautifulRadiantSkinProducts.com You can also find us on Facebook.

Do eyelash extensions make your lashes fall out?

Eye lash extensions:  Fad Gone Bad

First to know is that there are three types of false lashes, or extensions; synthetic, silk and mink.  In my opinion they are equally BAD for your own eyelashes!!  They are set in place using semi-permanent glue.  Off on a side note for second......what the heck does 'semi' permanent even mean?  Something is either permanent or it is not.  That term has always bugged me.  Okay, back to the topic at hand.  There are also different types of glue based on the sensitivity of the eyes.  The fact that there are different types of glue based on eye sensitivity is your first red flag that something has gone wrong along the way.  Right?  At some point someone had a bad reaction to the glue which lead to the different types that now exist.  This didn't happen just once, if it did there would only be 2 types of glue, but there are many types of glue.  What does this tell you and how sure are you the person applying your falsies will know which to use?

The following information is not just my opinions, they are facts gathered from both medical journals and from my personal exposure to countless clients who have had falsies applied (not at our treatment center, we don't offer this service!!!) and have had some awful reactions to the glue and or lost their lashes, in some cases almost completely!

In 2014 the AAO (American Academy of Ophthalmology) found and officially warned the dangers of lash extensions and their glue.  Countless infections and swelling of the cornea and eye have been recorded.  In many cases medical intervention was necessary.   The Consumer Report in 2014 also reports countless cases of bacterial and fungal infections have occurred.  In addition, as though that is not enough, they will cause your natural lashes to thin and fall out.  There is no way around the last statement, this WILL happen.  You cannot have eyelash glue on your lashes without this happening.  Your own lashes can not breathe, they cannot get the oxygen necessary for growth, in essence it clogs the root making them sparse over time.  This is what keeps people going back for more lashes.  Are you willing to commit to falsies FOREVER?

In addition to the risks of the above situations happening to you also consider the ridiculous care they take once applied.  You cannot expose them to heat, steam, emollient products (like eye creams, eye pads, and make-up remover) swimming is discouraged, Jacuzzis, steam rooms too, they shouldn't be rubbed......I don't know about you but I rub my eyes when tired.  Mascara is discouraged, waterproof is out of the question etc.

In addition to all of this they are expensive and need to be reapplied often because they fall out.  The most disturbing bit of information I have read during my research is that the allergies to the glue are not  usually discovered the first or second time lashes are applied, rather the allergic reaction happens over time due to continuous use.  So when will it happen to you?  Or will it happen to you?  Are you willing to find out?  I'm sure not.  It's a gimmick that is already dying out due to the immense problems these lashes cause.  Knowledge is power, be smart.

Juicing for Beautifuul Radiant Skin

Juicing for beautiful skin and overall good health.  I do a juice fast about every 4 months.  I know there is a lot of controversy about this issue, rather it works or not.  It works for me, that's all I know.  Juicing takes a lot of time but it is worth it.  Today is day 8 of my fast, I have had nothing but juice for 8 days and I feel great.  Day 3 and 4 are the hardest days for me.  I have more energy, am more focused, less foggy brain going on, my hair and skin look better and the added bonus is I'm lighter on my toes making cycling easier and more fun.  These are just 4 of my favorite juice blends.  As you can see, I don't juice carrots, I buy that one, it's 100% carrots, nothing added.  The rest.... I juice.  If you want complete recipes visit the website at BRSfacialspa.com and look for juicing in the table of contents.

Yellow - Is Turmeric, Ginger, Mango, Lemon, Orange and Coconut Water
Beige - Almond Milk made with almonds that were soaked overnight, Coconut Water, Pears
Red - Strawberries, Blueberries, Red Apples, Ginger, Water Melon, Coconut Water
Green - Celery, Collard Greens, Kale, Cucumber, Dandelion Leaf, Ginger, Green Apple, Romaine, Spinach, Lemon, Turmeric, Kiwi, Parsley

Demodex Skin Mites & Rosacea

Time to gross out everybody!  Before I explain what these demodex mites are, let me start with everybody has them, yes even you.  That being said they still gross me out.  These mites feed on facial oil and skin cells.  They are little party animals, usually coming out to feast during the night while you sleep. They reside in the base of the hair follicle.  During the day, and don't ask me how they know day from night, but they do, they feed on the oil and skin cells.  At night they mate and the female will lay eggs inside the hair follicle.  This is only one reason, but a REALLY good one for cleansing your face at night!!!  If this doesn't get you to do it then nothing will; I'm guessing.

A common skin condition called Rosacea is thought to be caused, at least in part, by an over production of these mites.  Apparently these little critters do not have an anus, yes I said that.  So what happens is they hold on to all their waste until they die, at which time during decomposition it is all released, usually inside the hair follicle.  It is now believed that this process is enough to trigger an immune reaction, inflammation and skin irritation, possibly Rosacea.

An over production of these mites is also thought to be one of the causes of hair loss.  Can they be safely removed and should we want to remove them?  I want to, as I said earlier, they gross me out.  Just the thought of them makes me squirm.  But honestly, there is no need.  They do not cause any harm if not over produced.  Laser is the best known treatment to kill them.  Topically you can apply Sea Buckhorn Oil to help with the inflammation of rosacea and if mites are to blame it will help to reduce the number of them which should reduce the inflammation too.

Hexapeptide-3, is it better than botox?

What is Hexapeptide-3?

BRS (Beautiful Radiant Skin Products) has tripled the amount of it in our Firm & Lift Elixir, it's an amazing ingredient your skin care products should not be without.

Hexapeptide-3 is derived from  natural proteins which work to relax the facial muscles and release muscle tension.  Using this ingredient will significantly affect how often you need  Botox injection.  It interrupts the neurotransmitters which give muscles the command to contract.

When you lessen muscle contractions, fine lines and wrinkles take much longer to form. This is not a cheap ingredient, but it's completely necessary, in my opinion, in a good anti-aging skin care routine.  Hexapeptide-3 (Also known as Argireline) helps in reducing the depth of the facial wrinkles that occur due to the contractions of the muscles.

At this time the only known mode of delivery is topical application.

Firm & Lift Elixir is a unique skin firming and lifting treatment which combines advanced anti-aging multi-peptides, Hexapeptide-3 with lifting seaweed and moisture binding Hyaluronic Acid in a silky fluid suspension. Multi-Peptides along with Hexapeptide-3 help to reduce the intensity and frequency of muscle contractions.
