Glycation and Aging Skin (Sugar driven aging)

Notice the criss cross pattern?

Glycation & Aging Skin (Sugar driven aging)

Glycation happens when sugar molecules bind to proteins and lipids in the skin leaving it deformed or looking much older than its years.  Exposure to sun will accelerate the process, along with a diet high in sugar.  Glycation interferes with the healthy formation of collagen and elastin.  Whenever collagen and elastin are compromised the skin will age much faster. In addition Glycation will deplete the skin of its natural moisture.  Hyaluronic Acid is made by our bodies naturally but depletes as we age.  A diet high in sugar can speed the process of Hyaluronic Acid loss resulting in older looking skin.

One way to help this skin condition, in addition to changing your diet, mentioned later in this article, is to treat it with Vitamin-C Infusions regularly.  Vitamin-C is essential in the body's production of collagen and is a potent antioxidant. When taken orally it has little effect on skin that is already compromised.  Although it is important include foods high in Vitamin-C to your diet, it is needed topically to help Glycation of the skin. Vitamin-C, when applied directly to the skin will help fight collagen degeneration and oxidative stress from free radicals.

Basically, Glycation accelerates the body's aging process by greatly limiting the skin's ability to produce and regenerate quality collagen.  Smoking and exposure to the sun along with a diet high in sugar come together as the perfect storm.

So what should you eat?  Eat fresh, less processed foods.  A diet high in all vegetables and low sugar fruits.  Berries are a great fruit, for example.  Berries are high in antioxidants and low in natural sugar.  Sugar is sugar, your body doesn't know the difference.  Eat like a diabetic.  Diabetics need to stay away from all foods that translate to sugar in the blood. Low carb is a good way to go.  For example, if you eat a bowl of pasta with a side of bread, it will translate to higher insulin levels once digested.  Same as if you ate a candy bar.  Stick to low glycemic foods, your skin will thank you, as will the rest of your body.

Fruits to avoid because they're high in sugar are:

Bananas
Apples
Pears
Plums
Apricots
Cherries
Grapes
Figs
Mangos

Some foods to avoid:

Pasta
Cereal
Oatmeal
Alcohol
Sweetened yogurt
Juice
Chips
Crackers
Milk
All Bread Products
Tortillas
Fried Foods
Processed Foods

Winter Skin Care Tips 2017

 Winter Skin Care Tips 2017

The ingredient to make sure is NOT missing in your daily skin care routine is Hyaluronic Acid.  Hyaluronic Acid holds more than 1000 times its weight in water.  It literally pulls in moisture from the environment as well as from other moisturizers used.  During the winter months it is much more common to experience dry skin.  Even if your skin is healthy and pH balanced, the cold weather coupled with the dry heat used inside homes and businesses simply takes a toll.  Not to mention that most of us do not drink as much water during the winter months.  Deep hydration is the life source of your complexion.  Here are some things to consider in your own skin care routines.  These are things that Beautiful Radiant Skin Products takes very seriously in order to ensure you the best possible skin care products & results. Try BRS Multi-Peptide &Collagen Elixir with Hyaluronic Acid.

Cleansing oils are a wonderful way to treat seasonal dry skin problems. Be aware though, that not all oils are created equal.  You want to make sure the Cleansing Oils being used are water soluble so they rinse completely clean.  The advantages to using an oil based cleanser during the cold winter months are obvious.  The right oil cleanser will not strip your skin in any way, will not dry or knock off the pH balance.  It will thoroughly cleanse and moisturize at the same time, while removing make-up quickly and efficiently.
Try BRS Cleansing Oil.

Elixirs, by design, lack occlusive ingredients like waxes, fatty acids, and other emollients.  They are designed to use under other more emollient products to enhance or treat specific issues like hyper-pigmentation, pore size, wrinkles, sagging lose skin, and blemished skin types among others.  For seriously dehydrated skin a good Elixir can go a long way in turning that around. Elixirs have a lightweight texture without many additives to dilute them, they are a more potent and pure way to add active ingredients to your skin. Elixirs deliver high concentrations of active ingredients and should be an essential part of your daily skin care routine.  Try BRS Elixirs & Boosters.

The right night time moisture should have the ability to tackle multiple problems in a single jar. Used over the Elixirs the right night time moisturizer delivers 10 times more hydration than a moisturizer alone.  Try BRS Moisturizers.

Coming in November 2017 is the new Hydrogel Facial Masques designed to use at home between your visits for extra hydration.  Also coming in November 2017 is the new Instant Glow Facial Oil recommended to used along with your moisturizers for added hydration or use it alone.  May also be used to add glow to your skin after applying your make-up, also great on cuticles, elbows, knees, anywhere you have dry skin.  Will be available to order online soon.

Collagen Induction Therapy at BRS facial spa

A Collagen Induction treatment session takes about 30-60 minutes, depending on if you wish to treat the face or the neck & chest too.  As a non-surgical procedure, Collagen Induction isn't known for many side effects outside of some short term localized redness, which is easily camouflaged with makeup. You will notice an improvement in skin texture with the first treatment and even better results are achieved by a series of treatments over time.  A series of 4 to 8 treatments is recommended for most.

Collagen Induction is a skin-improvement procedure based on skin injury/repair technique. Collagen Induction causes a controlled damage to the skin with very tiny needles that create precise micro-injuries; essentially creating channels in your skin. This triggers the healing process, inducing the skin's self-repairing mechanism that creates collagen and elastin, both of which help improve skin texture, tone, pigmentation and lift.  The micro channels help special serums penetrate deeper into the skin, enhancing their benefits as well.

As we age the skin becomes thinner, blood circulation deteriorates, and the natural production of collagen and elastin starts to slow down, which will cause the skin to lose firmness and elasticity. This natural ageing process starts from the inside out, but external factors can  accelerate the aging process.  Environmental exposures, sun, smoking, alcohol consumption, stress, hormones, lifestyle etc. accelerate the process as well.  Short of medical procedures this is the most advanced clinical procedure available today!

Collagen Induction shifts the natural repair mechanism of the skin into high gear to restart producing collagen and elastin. The self-repairing property of the skin is a 100% natural form of skin renewal from the inside out.

Collagen Induction is the only skin improvement method that combines both aspects: natural skin improvement  with controlled micro-injury and externally applied active ingredients by means of special serums. A combined effect in the battle against skin aging is tackling not just the consequences, but the cause of skin ageing.

Collagen Induction creates a younger & fresher you in a 100% natural way.  The skin becomes firmer and regains its elasticity, fine lines and wrinkles are visibly reduced or completely eliminated , pores become finer, circulation is stimulated and the overall condition of the skin improves tremendously.

Lymphatic Drainage Facial Treatment Benefits

Lymphatic Drainage Facial Treatment Benefits

Lymphatic drainage facial treatment is great for under eye bags and dark circles.  Often time, especially as we age, our skin metabolism slows down creating puddles of fluid that present themselves as dark circles or puffy eyes.  This treatment is great during allergy season, after a cold or sinus congestion, or after a night out on the town where alcohol and salty foods may have been consumed.  It is especially beneficial to have during and after a nutritional cleanse to help rid your lymphatic system of toxins that are being released during the process.

A sluggish lymph system can be the cause of many skin related problems.  The skin is the largest elimination organ, approximately 1/3 of all body impurities are eliminated and released through the pores of the skin.  Our bodies are constantly being assaulted by toxic substances, from the foods we consume and even from the air we breathe.

The immune systems first line of defense is the skin.  Toxic build-up and sluggish lymph circulation limits the bodies ability to function properly.  A few examples of skin health related problems that can be attributed to improper lymphatic functions are:

  • Bumps under the skin surface
  • Sensitive, allergic skin
  • Puffy eyes
  • Puffy cheeks
  • Acne
  • Dark under eye circles
  • Sallow dull complexion
One of the easiest ways to engage your lymph system is to use a very gentle oscillating facial brush morning and night.  Let the brush sit on the different areas of the skin you see in the above photo, taking at least 1-3 minutes to complete the face.  You will notice your skin instantly looking more vibrant once the stagnant fluid is removed through the lymph system.  Ask for the lymphatic treatment when you come if for your services, you'll love it!

At BRS we sell the perfect oscillating facial brush to engage your lymphatic system. You want a brush that is very gently and one that spins.  The lymph is located just under the surface of the skin.  If you use too much pressure it will not work.  Brushes that are too harsh, or too heavy on the skin will not engage the lymph system.

Best Night Time Skincare Advice & Products

Best Night Time Skincare Advice & Products

FACE IT....
Your night time skin care routine is so important.  It is the most important thing you can do to guarantee you wake-up looking refreshed & beautiful, ready to face your day.

The affects of sleep on your skin is not any different than the affect sleep has on the rest of your body.  Remember, your skin is the largest organ of your body and responds to how you treat it, good or bad.

While you are asleep the cells of your skin, along with all the cells in your body go into overdrive.  Your night time cells are doing the best they can to repair the damage done during the day from exposure to environmental contaminants as well as toxins we ingest through our nutritional choices.  During the night your blood vessels dilate, allowing an increased flow of nutrients and oxygen to be carried to the cells.  Did you know that your cells regenerate faster at night?  They do!  This is the perfect time to feed your skin what it needs to repair itself so you can awake with Beautiful Radiant Skin.

The best night time skin care routine is one that will do 3 things:

1.  Exfoliate the dead skin cells from the surface of your skin
2.  Feel your skin with cellular regenerative properties
3.  Moisturize with a product that goes deep enough to be retained all night

Best Steps For Radiant Skin

Best Steps For Beautiful Radiant Skin

Good Morning!
Every day, while working with clients, I explain the steps to caring for your skin at home.  It's important to know how to use your products, when to use them and what they do. These are general recommendations for most people.  These recommendations do not include boosters and other steps that are available for specific issues, it's simply skin care 101 for the masses. At the end of this post you can link to the Beautiful Radiant Skin Products mentioned in this article.  So here you go :-)

Morning Routine:

Step 1 - Cleanse your face: with the appropriate Beautiful Radiant Skin Cleanser

Step 2 - Apply the appropriate BRS Skin Softener:  Skin Softener is NOT a toner and it is NOT an astringent.  In the BRS line this important step does the opposite of what toners and astringents do. The purpose to softening the skin is so the next step of your routine can reach your skin at a cellular level.  This step OPENS the skin so it can receive the topical nutrient you will be applying.  Our objective is not to close the pores down and then pile on product that will simply sit on top of your skin.  Our objective is to open your skin up so it can drink in the next step.

Step 3 -  Apply BRS Vitamin-C Elixir to face, neck & chest:  This step is absolutely necessary for EVERYBODY, no matter your age. Vitamin-C, at the appropriate percentage, is one of the absolute best antioxidants you can apply topically to your skin.  Vitamin-C will protect your skin from the free radicals you are exposed to on a daily basis, both those environmental as well as ingested.  The best and most obvious benefit from topical Vitamin-C is that it retards your skins' ability to produce melanin.  Melanin is what leads to dark patches and dark spots known as hyperpigmentation. Although Vitamin-C will not lighten dark spots you already have, it will greatly reduce your skin's ability to make more if used daily.  This is why it is applied in the morning, to work for you all day while you are exposed to the elements.

Step 4 -  Apply your Sunscreen:  Sunscreen is a must.  You must wear it daily regardless of the weather.  In fact, your skin is exposed to the most dangerous UVA and UVB rays when it's cloudy and overcast.  It doesn't matter if it's raining or bright and sunny, wear your sunscreen.  Exposure to sun is one of the largest contributors to aging our skin faster.  Exposure without protection will break down collagen causing early sagging, lines and wrinkles.  Sun exposure will result in color and pigmentation problems and will eventually result in that leathery look we're all trying to avoid.  Its not a matter of 'if' this will happen with continued exposure but a matter of 'when.'  Keep this in mind.  Of course it is not only important for the look of your skin, but for your overall health.  Skin Cancers on the rise, so wear your sunscreen, SPF-30 or higher.

*******************************************************************************

Night Time Routine:

Step 1 - Follow steps 1 and 2 aboStep 2 - Apply  a Glycolic or Retinol Elixir to face neck & chest, avoiding the eye area:  Glycolics or Retinols, in high enough concentrations, will exfoliate your skin by dissolving the dead skin cells that attach to the surface.  As we age, our cellular turnover rate slows down, causing our skin to hold on to, instead of kicking off, the dead skin cells.  When this occurs, you may notice more adult breakouts, dull sallow looking skin, more blackheads and flaky uneven skin tone.  BRS Glycolic-50 and Retinol-A Elixirs use very high amounts of natural fruit acids and/or Retin-A [which is balanced with moisture to avoid the dryness that occurs with other Retin-A products].  Only one of these are used, not both.  Your skin care professional will let you know which is best for you.  Regular use of nightly exfoliators will result in smaller pores and smoother prettier skin.  It will expose the fresh new skin beneath.  That's where the glow comes from :-)

Step 3 - Apply Nightly Deep Moisturizer:  Night time is when your body heals itself while you sleep.  Using a deep moisturizer at night is like giving yourself a facial every night.  It is undoubtedly one of the most important things you can do for your skin.  At BRS we have combined our eye creams into our night creams so they are one, easy to use product.  Apply to your entire face, including under the eyes at night and let your skin drink up all the moisture.

How to choose the right chemical peel

Chemical Peels benefit the skin by super exfoliating the dead skin and revealing the new skin underneath.  Checmical Peels do not, however,  only affect on the dead skin cells;  they also take some of the healthy skin along with it.  This is a good thing because it is through this "controlled damage" to the healthy skin that causes the injury/repair reaction desired.  This process results in stronger healthier skin after the peel.  It is essential that you receive the right type of peel for your specific needs.  There are many types of peels and all have their place.  Knowing which peel is best for you should always be determined by a professional.  I have seen many clients coming to me who have tried to do a chemical peel at home which resulted in hyper-pigmentation (dark spots) or worse, scarring.  Just because you CAN order peels over the internet does not mean you SHOULD.  It is acid you are putting on your face!

So what is important to know before receiving a peel?  Knowing a bit about the most widely used types of peels will give you a leg up when discussing your options with your skin care professional.  Knowledge is power.  Following are some short descriptions of the most common types of peels.

Salicylic Peel - Best suited for oily or blemish prone skin types.  Helps to unclog pores and is a type of beta-hydroxy acid which delivers deeper than the alpha-hydroxy type.  Considered a light peel, expect minimal down time.  WARNING:  MUST AVOID IF ALLERGIC TO ASPIRIN.

Glycolic Peel - Best suited for light scarring from earlier acne or other dark pigmentation issues.  This is a alpha-hydroxy peel that helps greatly with blackheads, evens skin color, improves fine lines and wrinkles and smooths rough textured skin.  Considered a light peel with minimal down time.

Lactic Peel - Best suited for first time peel users.  Will give a healthy glow and is fine for those with dry skin types.    Helps fade dark spots and smooths fine lines and wrinkles.  Several applications done in a series is usually needed with type of peel.  There is little to no down time.  Considered a light peel.

TCA Peel - Good for scarring from previous acne, lightens dark spots, smooths fine lines and wrinkles.  This is a medium depth peel, going deeper than the others listed above,  but can be controlled by your esthetician to meet your specific needs.  Can go very deep if necessary by layering the product.  There are several days of down time with this peel.  Expect browning of the skin, and heavy peeling for most.

Jessner Peel - Personally not my favorite, but you will see it a lot.   I do not offer Jessner peels because......well......I don't want to.  Other peels are better options because they allow more control of the product.  Jessner Peels can go dreadfully wrong very quickly.  Jessner are best suited for oily skin types, they can be very drying and irritating if your skin is normal to dry.  This peel is an alcohol based peel, stronger than Glycolic or Salicylic.  Down time about one week.

Enzyme Peel - Enzyme peels are usually fruit acid based peels.  They exfoliate the surface of the skin and are very gentle compared to the other peels above.  Good for all skin types, no down time, and you may or may not see physical peeling of your skin.

Phenol Peel -  Short of Laser Peels this is the deepest peel available.  The risk with this peel is uneven skin tone if the peel is not applied evenly, or is left on for different amounts of time in different areas.  Darkening of the skin following this type of peel is likely if extra special care to stay 100% out of sun is not followed.  It is great for deeper wrinkles and scarring, but because of the side effects mentioned above it is not one that I favor.  Down time is significant and anesthesia is usually required due to the degree of burning.  It takes at least a month to recover from this type of peel.

TCA Peel 13% that can be layered up to 5 layers is my favorite

This TCA I use contains:
TCA
Retinol
Chain Phenol
Lactic Acid
Vitamin-C
Peptides
Fruit Derived Stem Cells
Kojic Acid

This peel will not only resurface the skin but will also provide a lift to the skin due to the collagen stimulation which is greatly increased in this type of peel, compared to others.  The healing time is about the same as with other peels, 7 days, with the most severe peeling on days 4, 5, & 6.  The skin peels in layers, just as it was applied in layers.  This peel also lightens the skin addressing hyper-pigmentation with great results.

First time peelers  should be advised to start off with the lowest penetrating peels and graduate slowly to the deeper peels.  Skin does need to build a tolerance to peels.  If you jump directly to the deeper peels you risk injury to the skin resulting in scarring, blistering and dark pigmentation.

Overall the use of peels is a standard in my practice, they give wonderful results over time.

Diamond Microdermabrasion a must for anti-aging

I consider Diamond Microdermabrasion skin care 101.  Along with a good at home treatment program one of the best treatments you should receive at least once a month is a good Diamond Microdermabrasion.  Especially the older we get, the more important it is to keep our skin exfoliated.  As we age our cellular turnover rates slows down, resulting in a build up of dry skin cells on the surface resulting in a dull sallow look to the skin.  In order to keep the fresh skin beneath showing and glowing you must exfoliate deeply at least once a month.   This is best achieved by rotating your treatment program so you are always addressing one of the 4 most important areas of anti-aging skin care.

1.  Exfoliation
2.  Color & Tone
3.  Hydration
4.  Elasticity

Diamond Microdermabrasion is just one way you can address all of these issues at once.
